Hanif Kara

Hanif Kara is a London based structural engineer. Since co-founding Adams Kara Taylor practice his particular ‘designled’ approach and interest in innovative form and material uses, prefabrication, sustainable construction and complex analysis methods have allowed him to work on award-winning band unique projects.
His approach extends beyond the technical aspects of structural engineering discipline and led to his appointment as a commissioner for CABE (Commission for Architecture and the Built Environment) in 2008; the fi rst structural engineer to be appointed to this position. Hanif was also the fi rst structural engineer to be selected for the Master Jury for the 2004 cycle of the Aga Khan Awards for Architecture, and was made an Honorary Fellow of the Royal Institute of British Architects the same year.
His work is linked with the Research and Education areas of design. He co-tutored a Diploma Unit at the Architectural Association in London from 2000 to 2004. In 2008 he accepted a position as the visiting Pierce Anderson Lecturer in Creative Engineering at the Graduate School of Design, Harvard and is currently visiting Professor of Architectural Technology at Kungliga Tekniska högskolan (KTH) in Stockholm, Sweden.
Hanif has also edited ‘Design Engineering’, a retrospective of AKT’s fi rst decade, which was published in 2008 and contributed to many publications and exhibitions relating to and promoting the role of Engineers.
